Maastricht is at the risk of falling asleep. On the one hand, it has become spoiled by historical luck, such as the foundation of the university and its well-preserved city centre. On the other hand, it has become afraid to tackle the big challenges of tomorrow. Some of these challenges are new, such as the ageing population and the debates surrounding internationalisation. Others have long existed in Maastricht, such as age-old inequality, physical segregation, difficult relations with the rest of Limburg and the complications that are inherently part of a border city. In this small bilingual book, Jules Ortjens, Romy Frijters and Mart den Heijer aim to start a dialogue in our city. In doing so, this book does not claim to have all the answers to these challenges, but it does highlight the importance of making these challenges discussable in this city and among its diverse inhabitants.
